Jesus paid the ultimate sacrifice for all humanity
At the 11th hour on November 11, 1918, World War I was officially declared over. World War I Allies and Germany had signed an armistice pre-dawn. This covenant of peace, although unsustained, became the landmark by which we pause annually to reflect on the sacrifice and service of our armed forces.
Every November 11 we pay homage to the men and women—past and present—who defend and protect our countries in times of peace and war.
Armistice Day, Remembrance Day or Veterans Day as it is called, is a bitter-sweet memorial of the honor and pain of sacrifice, the cost of war, and our collective gratitude for the freedom and liberties we enjoy.
Some veterans have paid the ultimate sacrifice—giving their lives on front lines at home and abroad. Many live on, trapped in a personal battle with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Others are beleaguered by physical and mental disabilities and the struggle to reintegrate into civilian life.
As a Chayil army, let’s stand for them as they have for us. Let’s put them on our prayer list and daily pray for their peace and for their families, for we are assured that the effectual fervent prayer of the righteous avails much (James 5:16). Let’s also use our voice, finances, talent, connections and time to support our veterans and the organizations that attend to their needs.
By the world’s standard, they’ve rendered the highest service. Through God’s kingdom, let’s offer them the greatest gift: “greater love hath no man than this than to lay down his life for a friend” (John 15:13).
Lest we forget, we are the conduits of God’s compassion, love and power to those around us.
Lest we forget, by our compassion we go on the frontlines to make God’s love tangible.
Lest we forget, His love demonstrated through us has the power to heal and to restore.
Lest we forget, His covenant of peace made with us through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, is eternal.
Lest we forget, Christ gave His life for the redemption of all humanity (Isaiah 53) and unlike the armistice of 1918, God’s covenant of peace with us, sealed with the blood of Jesus Christ, will never be broken (Isaiah 54:10).
