Finding an anchor in the storm.
This past week has been like a Tsunami. The rapid spread of the Coronavirus COVID-19 across the world has brought a wave of upheaval that has shaken every human foundation and continues to disrupt life as we know it.
Children and adults alike are struggling with the uncertainty of the unknown. But in the midst of the storm, Jesus offers the reassurance of His peace to everyone who will listen.
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6
In our own strength and human understanding it is nearly impossible not to be fearful and anxious at this time. But by redirecting our attention from the chaos and uncertainty to Christ, we will find peace. For as we put our trust in God and anchor ourselves in His unshakable Word, we are strengthened against fear or uncertainty.
Like Peter in responding to Jesus’ invitation to try the seemingly impossible of walking on water, we have to keep our eyes on Jesus to stay afloat today.
Then, as Isaiah 26:3 assures us, God will keep in perfect peace all those whose mind are stayed on Him because they trust in Him. And those who trust in God are like Mount Zion, they shall not be moved or [shaken in the storm]. (Psalm 125).
4 Simple steps to access God’s peace
The beauty of this offer of God’s peace is that it is accessible to everyone.
Whether child or adult, the steps to God’s peace as laid out in Philippians 4:6 are the same. It’s a simple prayer of:
- a) letting Jesus Christ know your concern
- b) asking Him to help you
- c) trusting that He will and
- d) thanking Him in advance for His peace. It will quiet your heart and settle your mind to anchor you in the storm.
From your own experience you too will then be able to say like David, “In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.” (Psalm 4:8)
How can you be so sure of this?
Because God is not a man that he should lie (Numbers 23:19). He honors His word above His name (Psalm 138:2) and He watches over it to perform it.
Let’s take Him at His word today and accept the free gift of His peace: “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” John 14:27
