Be Wise

Be Wise

Fortify the Children to Preserve Their Future.

A frustrated teacher loses her voice in the daily battle to keep her classroom of 1st graders orderly. She rejects one student’s suggestion to ask God for help in the recurring situation.

“Why not?” the six year-old asks. “The principal says school is not a good place to talk about God because it brings confusion,” explains the teacher.

The discourse above happened recently at a public elementary school in Canada.

Contrary to the principal’s fear, “God is not a god of confusion, but of peace,” (1 Corinthians 14:33). And He urges us to trust in Him with all our heart and lean not on our own understanding, but in all our ways to acknowledge Him and He will direct our path” (Proverbs 3:5-6).

This was the wisdom implied in the suggestion of the six-year-old child to her frustrated teacher.

Our children are bombarded daily with deception from peers, the media, school, governments and interest groups advancing secular agendas.

While many of these influencers promote policies that try to censor and diminish God, let us as Christians, not slack in our responsibility to fortify our children and preserve the future God has for them.

They need a solid foundation of God’s truth to withstand the deception of the enemy whose purpose and intent we know is to steal, kill and destroy their destiny (John 10:10).

As Christians let’s not take this lightly.

“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour,” warns 1 Peter 5:8.

So how do we fortify our children against the daily deceptions they encounter?

  • Speak to your child(ren) daily to understand what is happening in their lives.
  • Intercede for them.
  • Pray with them.
  • Share your personal experiences of God—His power, sovereignty, favour, grace, forgiveness, healing, love, presence, protection, provision, correction, guidance—so that they know who He is.  “You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up” (Deuteronomy 6:7).
  • Teach them God’s Word so they know for themselves how to distinguish between truth and lies.

God was intentional about preserving the future of our children when he instructs us to “Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it,” (Proverbs 22:6). Note this is a command with strategy and a promise of hope for their future.

So this week as you pray for your child(ren), let’s also pray for their teachers, peers and all the potential influencers in their lives, that they too will come to know the truth of God’s word which has the power to set them free.
