What it takes to thrive as an adult.
One of the realities of becoming an adult is that we transition from needing parental consent to assuming personal responsibility for our own decisions and choices.
It’s a very liberating thought until you realize that the burden of choice and its consequence(s) rest squarely on your shoulders.
How do you know what’s best to do?
To thrive as an adult requires wisdom—the ability to use the right information to make the right choices at the right time for the right motive.
Spiritually, wisdom is accessible to all. “If any man lacks wisdom let him ask of God who gives generously without finding fault,” says James 1:5.
In this passage, James outlines the secret to getting wisdom:
- Ask God – God is all wise and knows the end from the beginning
- Ask with expectancy – be specific and know what you are asking for
- When you ask do not doubt – believe that you will receive what you ask for
- Ask in Jesus’ name – He is the gateway to accessing God’s promises
- Ask according to God’s will — God is obligated to honour his promises. He watches over his word to make it good and will not contradict himself.
Jesus modeled this principle and illustrated the results. “And Jesus grew in wisdom, in stature and in favour with God and man.” Luke 2:52
In Matthew 7:7-12, Jesus taught us to Ask. Seek. Knock. “For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.”
We are also given the attributes of God’s wisdom in James 3:17 (AMP). It is:
- first pure [morally and spiritually undefiled]
- then peace-loving [courteous, considerate]
- gentle
- reasonable [and willing to listen]
- full of compassion and good fruits
- unwavering
- without [self-righteous] hypocrisy [and self-serving guile].”
Contrast this list with the wisdom of the world and you will know the likely outcome of your decisions and choices.
“But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not be arrogant, and [as a result] be in defiance of the truth. This [superficial] wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly (secular), natural (unspiritual), even demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder [unrest, rebellion] and every evil thing and morally degrading practice.” (James 3:15-16 AMP).
Daily A.S.K. God for His wisdom in every decision. He will help you to thrive as an adult just as Jesus did—growing in wisdom, in stature and in favour with God and men.
