Struggling With Identity?

Try this mental shift

For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. Psalm 139:13-14

Are you struggling with your identity? Unsure of who you are, whether you belong and even what value you have to offer? The uncertainty of it all can be quite tormenting and even debilitating to our mental health and ability to function optimally day-by-day.

Who Am I? is a question often answered with a name, job title, a combination of these or some other social standing by which we define our worth and find significance.

When our interpretation of the question rests on what we do, which group we belong to and not so much the person we are at our core—the qualities that differentiates us individually from anyone else in any of these groups—we are left with a very fragile foundation for our identity. We easily become susceptible to loosing hope at the loss of a job. We lose our confidence when certain relationships fail or we become depressed when results detour from our expectations.

How do you remain confident and resilient and not lose yourself in the shifting tides of life?

The Bible tells us “as a man thinks in his heart so is he” (Proverbs 23:7).

Who you are is a reflection of what you think and believe. Our thoughts or beliefs inform our actions; actions form habits; habits develop into character and our character determines our destiny. Our belief sets the foundation for our identity, confidence, the life we lead and the legacy we create.

Psalm 139:13-14 says, you are “fearfully and wonderfully made” by God who does all things well. Our security and confidence is first in knowing and believing that we are God’s handiwork and he’s the God who does not make mistakes.

Guard your heart and fortify your thoughts

God cautions us, “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life” (Proverbs 4:23).

Philippians 4:8 provides a blueprint for how to effectively do this. “Whatsoever things are true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, of good report, if there is any virtue and any praise, think about these things.”

Practice this throughout your day. Make a conscious effort to focus your mind only on thoughts that align with this list and watch your confidence grow and peace restored. “You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!” Isaiah 26:3
